City of Urbana TV Committee to meet

It was reported that the City of Urbana's "Channel 13 Committee" will be reviewing a draft policy for the current City P.E.G. Channels 13 for CT customers and Channel 5 for Time Warner customers. It was also reported the Urbana City Dir. of Administration Bruce Evilsizor will recommend the two channels become a "Government Only" accessed and controlled channels rather than the current Public, Educational & Governmental (P.E.G.) channels. It was reported by the local newspaper that that was to mean the stations would only air government information about Urbana and Champaign County.

The meeting is to take place Friday July 12th at 1 p.m. in the administrative offices of the City Municipal building.

Thompson, Student Body President as the guest host of the local TV program “Urbana Leader” recently interviewed Dr. Stephen Jones and his wife Judy, UU’s new President since July. The interview can only be seen on CTTV channel 1 at: 8:00 a.m., 2:00, 7:30, and 9:30 p.m. daily. “Urbana Leader” is locally produced by Anthony Ehresmann.

Some of the most popular shows on television today are local television news shows, according to a new study by the Hearst-Argyle Television group.

A study found that local news and hosted interviewer programs were rated as four of the top 10 shows in seven large and mid sized television markets, during the three most recent Nielsen sweeps ratings periods.
Study Says That Local TV Offers More Than Primetime Shows and Network News
“There is more to local television than primetime and the network news.”
In the recently released Neilsen July ratings data, local programming accounted for six of the top 10 shows in Pittsburgh; five of the top 10 shows in Albuquerque, Boston, Kansas City and Milwaukee; and four of the top ten in Baltimore and Sacramento.
That works out to an average of just under five top 10 programs per market. According to the study, the average was about four in the February ratings and about three in May when network programming was stronger. The ratings data comes from the independent Nielsen surveys.
Local TV News can be a good bet for advertising dollars.
Local advertisers should consider advertising opportunities beyond network or syndicated national programming.
Local television can be a “wonderful advertising proposition, reaching the homes in the local market and provides a community service.

The loss of local government control of cable

Time Warner and AT&T have been making huge campaign donations to state officials to ensure the passage of SB117. SB117 eliminates local government control of cable. SB117 eliminates all local franchise agreements and gives control of the cable industry to the state. Sb117 eliminates all PEG funding including studios. SB117 supportors claimed that it would bring competition and lower rates to Ohioans. PEG channels are grandfathered until 2012 or the expiration of the current franchise whichever comes FIRST. Without funding, it hard to say how long communities such as Wadsworth, Dayton, Cincinnatti with be able to operate. Time Warner has the option to take back any PEG channel that are not "substantially used". Sb117 eliminates services such as free cable to senior citizen centers, classrooms and libraries,

Across the state of Ohio cities(including Dayton, Hudson, Cleveland,, Cincinnatti and Akron) passed resolutions against SB117.
Representatives from city councils and school boards across the state traveled to Columbus to testify in opposition to SB117.

In Texas, where similar legislation was passed, cable rates have increased. Tennessee recently decided that a similar bill was not good for the people of Tennessee.

Inspite of all this opposition, from mayors, city councils, and school boards, SB117 was passed and signed into law by Gov. Strickland 6/25/07

For our first Urbana Leader program I asked Ron Tompkins to go to the Champaign County Relay for Life and do a few interviews.

The program was very last moment and was edited from more than one and a half hours of video down to alittle less than 16 mins.

This YouTube video was posted in two parts, each about 8 mins.

In the future the program will run about 30 min. twice a month.
